Why this photo of LCD Soundsystem made us sad, and why it should you too

LCD Soundsystem are well renowned as being one of the biggest indie bands of all time; but whilst this may be the case, the crowd of which greeted them at their headline set at T in the Park on Sunday (10th July) didn't quite live up to their whole bravado.

As this photo suggests, their couldn't have been more than a few hundred people for the recently-reformed masters of electronic pop, and it goes without saying how much of a crying shame this is to see. Though whilst James Murphy and co may have been up against the main stage headliners Red Hot Chilli Peppers, surely the T-goers could have cut them at least some slack. Still, and true to their style, LCD played out a faultless set featuring long-time classics such as 'Daft Punk Is Playing At My House', 'New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down', 'Dance Yrself Clean' and 'All My Friends' to the fortunate souls that did turn out to see them. You may not be an LCD fan, and that's fair enough, I'm not in this to force you to appreciate a band, though my concern lays with this thought: "Why should bands like LCD Soundsystem try, if nobody is going to turn out for them?" Modern day music has become tasteless, easy and simple. Festival goers nowadays would much rather drink themselves to oblivion and dance to a DJ behind a computer screen than even comprehend seeing a band of LCD's calibre. Whilst its a huge shame for music lovers like myself, it's hard to hide from the fact that images like this are only ever going to become increasingly more common. Reading and Leeds is a prime example of a festival changing its appeal to adopt the interests of a generation who have been surrounded by today's mainstream, which therefore goes to prove why LCD haven't even be booked for this years festivals. Though I understand we all have our own tastes, it's really time we come together and start to appreciate independent music as a whole again; the real artists out there, like LCD Soundsystem, who write, play and perform their own tracks, otherwise we could be in danger of losing such a style and genre that is held so dearly to so many.
